Tourism Properties.com recommends Bartercard who are committed to helping Small to Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) grow and achieve financial success by facilitating a trade exchange network that offers dynamic and effective ways of conducting business.

Although the concept of barter is thousands of years old, bartering through Bartercard is the most innovative way of combining modern technology, a community of businesses, and indirect and direct marketing channels to increase your customer base, increase sales, increase profit and improve cashflow.

Most businesses operate on the earn-save-spend model for making purchases. They earn the money. They save the money. They spend the money. This model is effective when the business is earning enough money to cover costs, plus save a little for growth. But what happens when the business isn't earning enough money? Or if the business is experiencing the inevitable catch 22 - you need to grow now to earn more in the future? Bartercard delivers a viable and innovative solution to these common problems experienced by Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

Ever since the inception of Bartercard into the New Zealand economy in 1992, the way companies across the country conduct their day-to-day business has been revolutionised.  Bartercard’s world-leading innovative trade exchange system enables over 6,500 New Zealand member businesses and over 36,000 global member businesses to benefit from the cashless economy of barter.

With commitment and tenacity, Bartercard has forged a substantial company that is today the largest and fastest growing barter network in the world.  Bartercard currently trades over $1.3 billion in cashless transactions per annum, and operates in 12 countries, however, new international markets are continually opening.  Bartercard offers flexibility in that a member of Bartercard can trade with any other member of the exchange globally without the need for a direct two-way exchange of goods and services.

TRANSACTION EXAMPLE

A restaurant wishes to "barter" for $10,000 worth of printing using meals and drinks.  No printer would ever want $10,000 in meals from the one restaurant, however by selecting a Bartercard printer, the restaurateur pays the printer with T$10,000 Trade Dollars. The printer’s account is "credited" and the restaurateur’s account "debited", so the restaurant now owes T$10,000 in meals to the Bartercard network, NOT the printer.  This is repaid as various Bartercard members come to the restaurant (new business) over the following months.  Hence, the restaurant has paid for its printing requirements with meals, using an interest-free "line of credit" and at a cost of approximately 30 - 40 cents in the dollar, in replacement good cost.

The printer can now use the Trade Dollars earned to buy office furniture, advertising, car repairs, stationery, courier services, colour separations, accounting and legal services ~ even a family holiday.  These are all commodities for which the printer would normally pay cash. By using their Bartercard Trade Dollars, the printer conserves his cash and benefits from the extra business.

MARKETING THROUGH BARTERCARD

Businesses often struggle with finding cashflow to reinvest in the growth of their business.  As a result, marketing efforts often fall to the bottom of the priorities list.  Bartercard members can resolve this situation by using Bartercard Trade Dollars within the exchange network on expenses relating to marketing activities.

Trade opportunities relating to marketing available through Bartercard members include:

  • Advertising in magazines, newspapers, radio
  • Website design and management
  • Signage, banners and billboards
  • Creative services, including design and placement
  • Merchandising, including branded uniforms

Additionally, Bartercard members benefit from the additional services provided through membership in the trade exchange, including:

  • Free listing in the printed directory, which provides other members with your business’ contact details and a short description of your goods and services.
  • Free listing on the international online directory, providing all 55,000 members worldwide with your business’ details.
  • 'Bartercard Welcome Here' stickers and A-Frame cards to display in your business’ premises to promote the fact that you are a member of the Bartercard network.
  • The Bartercard brand to be placed on collateral, to promote your membership in the Bartercard network (this can be obtained with permission from the National Office).
  • Bartercard networking functions, where you can meet other Bartercard members in a relaxed setting.
  • Member trade shows, where you can promote your goods and services to other Bartercard members.

Combined, these initiatives allow Bartercard member businesses to increase their customer base further and market their goods and services in a cost-efficient manner.

PAY CREDITORS ON TRADE

Businesses can pay all or part of their cash debt to creditors in goods or services.  If your creditor is keen to receive payment, they may be open to accepting goods or services they can use in settlement of the debt. You simply pay the Bartercard supplier on behalf of the creditor in Trade Dollars and then arrange for delivery of the goods or fulfillment of the service.

Here’s how:

A leather retailer was behind in paying one of her suppliers. To keep her supplier happy, she offered a once-off payment in products or services to the same value. Fortunately the supplier required signage at the time, which they would have had to find the cash for anyway, so they were accepting of her proposal. She coordinated and paid for their signage on trade, in lieu of her outstanding invoice.

Benefits:

  • You save cash by paying your creditors in goods or services available through the Bartercard system
  • Your creditor receives payment

INTEREST FREE LINE OF CREDIT

Bartercard members receive an interest-free line of credit which allows them to make purchases immediately upon joining the Bartercard network.

The level of credit given is determined by assessment of the application and information provided.  These credit limits are reviewed regularly by Bartercard's credit department and can be extended or reduced depending upon the members trading history within the exchange.  Members can also apply at any time to be considered for a credit limit increase.

This interest-free line of credit enables members to continue using the Bartercard network to make purchases even during times when their cashflow has slowed.  This way, members can conserve their cash while always having access to the goods and services available through the Bartercard system.
