ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE AREA

Franz Josef Glacier was first explored in 1865 by geologist Julius von Haast, who named it after the Austrian emperor. The glacier is five kilometres from the town of the same name, and a 1.5 hour walk will take you to within 750m of its terminal face.  

If you want to actually make contact with the glacier, take a guided ice walk or a heli-hike. Aerial sightseeing is another option.

There's a range of natural attractions in close proximity to Franz Josef Glacier Village. Lose yourself in the rainforests, waterfalls, and lakes.

In the town you’ll find plenty of activities and things to do, relax at the Glacier Hot Pools or explore the wildlife centre. At nearby Lake Mapourika, you can take a kayak tour or rent a stand-up paddle board.

Five star comfort 5 minutes from town Rooms are spacious, modern and incredibly comfortable with a tasteful decor, we were in the king suite with jacuzzi and it was great to soak in it after a long day of travel. The staff were incredibly friendly and great to talk to and we ended up deciding to do the return leg of our holiday back through Franz Josef just so we could spend another night here. There is also a great laundry available which is handy if you need to do some washing while travelling through!.


Sensational stay, a true oasis by name and nature We really enjoyed our 1-night stay. Rooms are lush. Beautiful space, tastefully decorated, designer coat racks, electric fireplace and lush carpet underfoot. Lovely double sink bathrooms with bath!

Located 3-4 km outside town centre to the north. Free parking.

Price was totes reasonable. But the highlight was dinner at the hotel restaurant. A relaxed fine dining experience at cafe prices (mains $22 vege curry $34 Lamb back strap). One of the best meals to date. Great wine - we tried the Baby Doll Pinot Noir.

Between courses, we strolled amongst the tables looking at the wonderful photography prints that adorn the walls by local artist Andris Apse.

The space is long and narrow, opening up onto an outdoor dining deck with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains.

We enjoyed a pre-dinner stroll around the grassy grounds, complete with little lake and some neighbourly sheep ( of course)

Rodrigues was our wonderful host, giving excellent commentary on the art and local attractions. His calm and assured manner was a delight.

 


Even better thank you think it will be this is a surprisingly great alternative to staying in the town itself. The towns are very touristy and filled with backpackers, but this hotel is quiet and cute and refined. The staff is awesome. Dinner is great. Breakfast is even better.
