The development of Titoki Sporting Estate is based on the owners aspirations to provide the world's finest wild high flying pheasants to challenge the most skilled and experienced shooters.
Everything about the estate speaks of passion, determination and "only the best will do" to achieve the finest driven Pheasant preserve in the Southern Hemisphere if not the world. With added bonuses of excellent Clay shooting facilities, hunting for ducks, rabbits, wild pigs, deer and wonderful rainbow and brown trout spawning streams.
Up until 1993 the property was totally a grazing proposition, running a Hereford Cattle Stud and a Perendale Sheep Stud. It always enjoyed a reputation for healthy stock, top breeding results and a good wool and bone growth.
In 1993 a tree planting programme of Douglas firs commneced and the Titoki Driven Pheasant Shoot commenced in 2000. This was the first year that Pheasant Preserves were allowed in New Zealand.
The natural Topography lended itself to excellent pegs coupled with climate, habitat, cover, natural feed supply and ample water. With no cover crops or feed crops, providing a huge saving in costs, the estate quickly developed in to a shoot of the highest standard.
Poults are released at six weeks into eleven pens over the property and are encouraged out of the pens at about ten weeks and fed in the forests and native trees. The estate doesn't bit or clip wings. The adult birds are driven out of the forests and tree cover providing a very even flow, without any problems with flushes. The birds don't like to walk as they tend to fly as soon as they see someone on foot. There are about 25 drives to use and in no case are the birds beat back to the pens.
All pegs always get birds over and have never experienced a dry peg.
The contour and steepness of the hills, running to flat floor valleys provide opportunites to present very sporting targets.
The property has been rated by several professional keepers to be suitable for a release of 20,000 poults.
