St Paul’s Cannery
St Paul’s Cannery is a Whangaroa institution. Having featured on Gone Fishing and such like TV shows more than once, there is not a fishing boat of any kind in the area that doesn’t know who they are, and usually have them on speed dial (actually, VHF radio most of the time) so that the chiller truck turns up at the wharf and takes the catch off the boat within minutes of arrival.
St Paul’s Cannery provides a variety of services to a variety of people, however commonly a tourist or local recreational game fisher may catch a Striped Marlin or Tuna and contract St Paul’s to can or smoke the fish for them so that they can enjoy the proceeds of their catch back at home. They are fully licensed by NZFSA so that their produce can be exported back home for overseas visitors.
Being fully licensed, with all necessary approvals in place, St Paul’s is an entirely professional operation, smoking and canning fish, and wild game meats.
Taratara Smokehouse
Taratara Smokehouse is a separate entity that is a retail venture, sourcing the finest cuts of fish from commercial suppliers and smoking the fish, then packaging it and supplying it to supermarkets (including 14 New World Supermarkets at time of writing) restaurants and delicatessens throughout the North Island.
Their product is spectacular and demand is constantly increasing. This part of the operation has massive scope for growth, as although they are already supplying a good number of supermarkets and retail outlets the opportunity for expansion is huge and limited only by your imagination.
The businesses come fully equipped with all of the machinery and tools, smokehouses, canning plants and processing and packaging equipment required to operate it and can be run 12 months of the year (unless you are off fishing of course).
If you have no experience in this industry it is very easy to learn with the right training, which the owners are more than happy to do for you. They entered this business with no experience, picked it up quickly and have started the Taratara retail venture themselves.
Base of Operations – The House
The smoke house and canning operation is situated on an absolutely breathtaking piece of land above Whangaroa Harbour at the base of St Paul’s Rock, hence the name. The views are amazing, and wrap around the front lawn, and the house has been designed to take full advantage of this.
The home is architecturally designed with an open plan kitchen and lounge facing the harbour.
There are 3 generous bedrooms, all with built-in wardrobes. The master bedroom has an ensuite. There is a great kitchen with modern appliances, excellent pantry, plenty of storage and bench space.
There are open plan living areas with spectacular views of the harbour, reverse-cycle airconditioning as well as a substantial woodburner, solar hot water heating.
To cap it all off there is a large deck to take full advantage of outdoor living, complete with spa pool to sit in and soak up the view.
The Cottage
There is a fully self contained studio style cottage, which would be suitable for guests, family, as a rental or would be ideal for a Bed and Breakfast style operation. It has great views and is away from the main residence in a quiet peaceful setting.
The Workspace
There is a well setup and well organised work area complete with hot and cold smokehouses, processing room, chiller, waste freezer, drying room, vacuum packers, chiller truck and company car - everything you need to simply pick up the reins and run. This business runs from late December through to mid-May each year.
In addition to all of this there is a two bay implement shed and a garage.Taratara Smokehouse, St Paul’s Cannery and the associated buildings is a great opportunity for anyone who loves the outdoors, fishing, and magnificent views. The Whangaroa Harbour is the ideal environment for anyone who appreciates the outdoors and fishing lifestyle (and let’s face it, the time you spend on the boat would in fact be viewed as Research and Development!!).
The skill sets required are easily taught to anyone willing to learn, so experience is not required at all.
The current owners have an opportunity overseas, so are very keen to move on, and are happy to enter into negotiations with any serious enquirers.
