Franz Josef Glacier was first explored in 1865 by geologist Julius von Haast, who named it after the Austrian emperor. The glacier is five kilometres from the town of the same name, and a 1.5 hour walk will take you to within 750m of its terminal face.
If you want to actually make contact with the glacier, take a guided ice walk or a heli-hike. Aerial sightseeing is another option. There's a range of natural attractions in close proximity to Franz Josef Glacier Village. Lose yourself in the rainforests, waterfalls, and lakes.
In the town you’ll find plenty of places to stay and eat, or relax at the glacier hot pools or explore the wildlife centre. At nearby Lake Mapourika, you can take a kayak tour or rent a stand-up paddle board.

Family vacation - Great hotel in franz josef. We had a very large room with living room, separate bedroom, large bathroom and lovely patio. The room feels rustic but well appointed and clean. Bed was very comfortable. Location is a short drive (3 min) to town. There is a nice communal outdoor space with a huge chessboard and nice outdoor dining table. Inside there’s a big fireplace and sofas with games available. Breakfast was included. It was quite good with 3 hot options and a cold buffet.
Excellent place to stay in Franz Josef - We spent two nights here and it is a wonderful lodge. The room was large and modern and it has great views. The breakfast is well done and has everything you could want. We spent time with a glass of wine in the lounge and enjoyed the views. Look for the special help when you check-out. Great place.
Beautiful and inviting - Loved the views of the mountains from this beautiful lodge and the comfort and quiet of our room. Our room was equipped with snacks, coffee/tea, refrigerator and a large bathroom. The host was very welcoming and helpful, and her breakfast was very generous and delicious. I would definitely return just for the food alone! Nicely located minutes from town. Would stay there again in a heartbeat!
