ABOUT MURCHISON : GATEWAY TO THE WEST COAST
Murchison is the Tasman District's southern most township of around 650 residents, and is the central base for the many world famous outdoor activities in the area including historic gold trails, rafting, kayaking and jetboating, tramping, hunting and fishing.
Murchison is located 125 km south of Nelson ( approximately 1.5 hours drive ), 100 kms east of Westport, 165 kms southwest of Blenheim and 290 kms from Christchurch. Geographic isolation has meant the residents of Murchison have developed a real "can do" attitude. Building their own hydroelectric power scheme, airport and television transmitter are just a few of the challenges this enterprising town has taken on.
Recently the community banded together with the Tasman District Council to raise funds and build a new sports, recreation and cultural centre. Murchison also has a new hospital.
Farming, mining and forestry, continue to be important industries to Murchison, but residents are not afraid to branch out. This attitude is reflected in the way the town has embraced the adventure tourism industry and its stunning cscenery hads attracted movie and documentary film crews on several occassions.
Murchison has a number of world class fishing lodges as well as a good variety of other accommodation, in the past year two new motor home parks have opened.
The mighty Buller River flows through the town. You can experience the river at high speed on a jet boat or up close and personal on a white water rafting trip or Kayak. Visit from above on a swing bridge and flying fox, or get your hands into the water panning for gold, perhaps catch a nice Brown or Rainbow trout. Great hunting experiences are available as well in the magnificent and spectacular hills and mountains of Murchison and surrounds. The are beautiful walks and a 9 hole golf course.
The New Zealand Kayak School operates out of Murchison and provides world class courses for both beginners and advanced kayaking.
