Glenorchy, a true slice of New Zealand paradise, sits a spectacular 45-minute drive northwest of Queenstown at the northern end of Lake Wakatipu.
Surrounded by magnificent snow-capped mountains, pristine lakes and rivers, ancient beech forests and at the edge of Mount Aspiring and Fiordland national parks, the frontier town of Glenorchy has provided the backdrop for many films, including The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. There are a range of activities that will get you out into the great outdoors for which this area is famous. There are also great food and beverage options, plus a super friendly local community.
The nearby settlements of Kinloch and Paradise are also known for their stunning scenery and tranquil setting. The area is also the gateway to several world-famous multi-day hikes including the Routeburn Track, one of New Zealand’s Great Walks. For walks closer to town, there are well-graded walkways that lead to points of interest including the Glenorchy Walkway, Whakaari Conservation Area and Mt Judah, where the remains of scheelite mines can be found.
There are a number of exciting ways you can explore the beauty of this pristine area. Take the sites in by horseback and ride through braided rivers, native forests and across open fields. By water you can journey into the heart of glacier country with a jetboat, canoe or kayak. Take a stunning scenic flight into unexplored wilderness or experience the thrill of a skydive over landscapes that have remained untouched for centuries. Or grab a backpack and hiking boots and use Glenorchy as a base for one of the many spectacular walking tracks including the Routeburn, Greenstone and Caples Tracks. Anglers will find salmon in the local rivers, while hunters enjoy seeking out a wide variety of game in the surrounding hills. There are also farm tours available and off road four wheel driving and photo safaris.
The magic of Glenorchy touches everyone that visits, so whether you want to relax and enjoy the natural environment or be challenged in the great outdoors, you won’t leave disappointed!

Glenorchy based fishing trip! ★★★★★
Booked this place based on convenience and it exceeded my expectations with very reasonable rates for accommodation and a welcoming bar and cafe all packaged in. The staff and locals were friendly and engaging and my room was hotel standard belying the humble exterior. The food was typical pub food but well made and presented. A fantastic base for some great trout fishing.
Icy delight! ★★★★★
We were in Glenorchy for a sightseeing day and found ourselves at the Bold Peak Lodge for warming up on a freezing morning. The breakfast and coffee was excellent! The staff are amazingly welcoming and makes the visit special.
View from our room was stunning with magnificent vistas of snow capped peaks! ★★★★
Bold Peak Lodge is named after the highest peak in this photo. Centrally located in Glenorchy this accommodation, is comfortable, spacious and clean. The staff are incredibly helpful and friendly. The cafe attached to the lodge serves great coffee and food choices whether for breakfast, lunch or just a snack. We stayed in an upstairs room and this was my preferred choice. It did not disappoint. This establishment also has a pub, which serves meals and is close to the wharf and beautiful walks. Would stay again.
Meals Were Fantastic! ★★★★
I don’t know why, but for some reason I assumed this place would be an old school pub with sub par food. Man was I wrong – the meals were fantastic, the service was super friendly, and the room was comfortable and warm. I also had cabinet food from the cafe for takeaway lunches and the salmon bagel was 10/10. I will definitely recommend to friends. Thanks for the drinks!
Very Cozy & Nice View! ★★★★
Large premises and helpful staff. Great view out the windows. I had grilled chicken salad, lemon yoghurt cake and a drink for $31 nzd. Salad had sun dried tomatoes, black olives, sprouts and carrot strips. A very large serving. The cake had a nice lemon taste and very flavourful. Would definitely recommend a place to stop
Best Accommodation Ever ★★★★★
We had to stay in Glenorchy for an extra night due to some unforeseen circumstances and were so lucky to have found the Bold Peak Lodge. The room was clean and comfortable, toilet is nice and basically equipped with everything that you may need. The staff was really friendly, helpful and approachable! Overall it was a very pleasant stay!
Best Place to Grab Takeaway Gourmet for your Routeburn Tramp ★★★★★
My husband and I enjoyed a very quick stay at the Bold Peak Lodge late January. Our motivation was to stay overnight somewhere very close to start of the Routeburn Track (on this side of the pass). The Bold Peak Lodge’s cafe and restaurant opened early for breakfast and at 8am I was able to grab two HUGE smoked salmon and salad sandwiches on poppyseed bagels. They wrapped them in foil and off we went to the trailhead. 5 hours later we’re at the top of the trail at a shelter enjoying the fresh sandwiches. Fellow hikers having their own lunch were quite jealous!!
Brilliant Breakfast & Lunch ★★★★★
Did part Routeburn as winter tramp. Get great breakfast here to prepare you for the walk in. So good stopped back here next day on way out for lunch. Great quiche.
Great Food & Service ★★★★★
This was the perfect spot for a low key family meal out with excellent kiwi hospitality and a friendly atmosphere. The blue cod and chips was delicious and the boys enjoyed their burgers. We enjoyed a game of pool and darts before heading off. Reasonable prices too.
Oh my! After the hustle-bustle of Queenstown, this place is amazing. Stunning scenery, views to die for, and so relaxed. They were right when they named it paradise up here! Combine this with friendly kiwi staff, locals who help with all kinds of information, our stay here was amazing. Gorgeous room, comfy bed, beautiful views, and the food was so healthy and heart-warming. Thank you to you and your staff. We will be coming back!
So Good ★★★★
We visited the sugar loaf cafe for lunch, I have a few food issues and did not have high expectations but was so happily surprised. They pulled out a folder which listed all of the food ingredients. Made suggestions and, although it was good Friday and they were crazy busy, nothing was too much trouble. It was ‘sure thing’ and ‘yes of course we can.’ AND the food was delicious. So happy, thank you!
Perfect Food & Drink Stop! ★★★★★
We unfortunately didn’t stay here but the place we were staying in Glenorchy stopped serving food early so we ended up here for a few meals. The bar staff are the friendliest we came across in NZ and that’s saying something as everyone has been so friendly! There’s a bar Snacks menus (all so big they’re suitable as meals in their own right) and then a full menu which includes things like steak, salad, burgers, pasta – all delicious.
Bold Peak Lodge Restaurant ★★★★★
Called in today for drinks and cakes. Good service and the cakes, all gluten free for us brilliant. Nice friendly atmosphere. Wide range of drinks and cakes. Comfortable seating both inside and outside.
Fun, Friendly, and Helpful ★★★★★
The food at the cafe was excellent, the room was comfortable, and the staff were all very nice and extremely helpful. They were texting family and off duty staff trying to find someone to give us a lift to the airport in Queenstown!
