Makarora

Situated on the Haast Pass Highway, between Wanaka and the West Coast, Makarora offers visitors easy access to Mt Aspiring National Park.

The Area is known for its outdoor and adventurous activities. There are several walks in the area from ½ hour duration to 3 days.  On the Top 10 of short walks in New Zealand is the Blue Pools, which is only 10 minutes up the road. When we stayed in Makarora the options for food was not so many, and therefore our expectations on the café wasn’t to high. We ate here two evenings, and the first day we had the buffé. All of the dishes tasted really good and there was at least 6 different mains to chose from together with sallads. The second day we tried the burger, and it too was really delicious. We can without doubt recommend an eat here if your around!.

My husband considers himself a pie connoisseur and I consider myself a bit of a coffee connoissuer. We have to say this place does the best of both. We did find it more difficult in the South Island than the North Island of NZ to find good coffee. They have hot cooked meals and convenience sandwiches, cakes, pies etc. There is also a Souvenir shop next door, toilets and both indoor and outdoor seating. Great place for a stop between Wanaka and Haast.

We needed a food stop before heading further north so chose the Makarora Country Cafe as the most convenient. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food/beverages and the service.
New staff were being inducted while we were there but that appeared to make no difference to the friendly and helpful service.The food was good!
