Makarora Country Cafe
Makarora Country Cafe, Bar & Campervan Park is set on approximately 1 hectare (10,086m2) in Makarora, which borders Mount Aspiring National Park. Makarora is only a 40-minute drive to Wanaka, and is rich in hidden gems of history, culture, adventure and natural beauty. Makarora is the halfway point, and a ‘must-stop’ location, between Queenstown and the Glaciers.
The location is key to this business’ viability, being on the State Highway.
Makarora Country Cafe is a successful business, with multiple Income streams including cafe, licenced bar, retail gift shop, fuel station, campervan/motorcamp and holiday park.
It has a great gross profit of approximately 54.86%.
Tour coaches and a regular bus connection have made this their preferred stopover, including InterCity and GreatSights, stopping twice a day, 365 days a year!
The Business is a very simple operation with no specialist skills required, and the current owner has extensive operation manuals prepared for the new owner(s). The current owner is offering a training period after settlement, to ensure a smooth passing of the reins. In terms of staffing, this business allows the owner to manage the business during the quiet periods and employ an additional 8 to 10 staff during the busy season, no experience is required.
Currently there are multiple income streams, with the opportunity to develop further:
- Cafe, restaurant & cone ice creams
- Bar, with on-licence – An off-licence could be added?
- Fuel pumps
- Gift shop – which could be developed further with local products including honey, wool & skincare items?
- Camping ground, with both powered points and tent sites – currently 10 service points for campervan parking and great onsite facilities
- A substantial owners’ residence which could also be used as additional tourist accommodation as a lodge or B&B operation
- Cabins could be added to the existing holiday park?
- Vacant land available on a separate title is included in the asking price. This is ideal for the future development of motel studios or motel units to further develop the existing campervan park. This land is designated visitor accommodation.

The Area is known for its outdoor and adventurous activities. There are several walks in the area from ½ hour duration to 3 days. On the Top 10 of short walks in New Zealand is the Blue Pools, which is only 10 minutes up the road. Exclusive Hunting and Fishing Lodges, as well as Tourist Scenic Helicopter/ Fixed Wing Flights and Jet Boat excursions operate in the Makarora Valley.
Choose a scenic flight in a plane or helicopter, or take a jetboat up the Makarora and Wilkin Rivers – whichever way you choose to enter the World Heritage Area, you can do so easily from Makarora. A popular hunting and Fishing area, many outdoor enthusiasts utilise the transport resources available to reach the more secluded parts of the park.
A few minutes from the small village of Makarora heading west is the Blue Pools Walk. Right off the main highway enter a world of lush rainforest, native bird trills, and glacier-fed pools. The crystalline azure of the pools amazes! The water is so flawlessly clear trout resting in it appear suspended.
Historically and culturally Makarora has a special place in the hearts of the Waitaha Nation – the first people of this land. A traditional ancient medicine village existed on the very site where modern Makarora now stands. A place of restoration, the Waitaha people sought healing of body & mind in the wilds of Makarora.

Makarora Country Cafe State Highway 6 ★★★★★ |
In the middle of a very bleak cold winters day, how delightful it was for a couple of aged pensioners to find such a welcome. Everything served with friendly smiles and Greetings.A highlight of our 3000 kms trip around the South Island. Replete and happy we continued on our way. Thank you
Worth the stop! ★★★★★
We visited this café whilst in transit on our tour. Very good grub Very good service and organisation. They managed our 48 person group superbly Value for money
Late lunch on bike from Cromwell ★★★★★
Always something nice and simple to eat here. Tasty. Today a cheese and onion toastie and a mocha. Staff friendly as usual. Took a friend on a motorbike ride. What a great country to motorcycle in.
Much better than expected ★★★★★
When we stayed in Makarora the options for food was not so many, and therefore our expectations on the café wasn’t to high. We ate here two evenings, and the first day we had the buffé. All of the dishes tasted really good and there was at least 6 different mains to chose from together with sallads. The second day we tried the burger, and it too was really delicious. We can without doubt recommend an eat here if your around!.
Amazing Pies, Awesome coffee ★★★★★
My husband considers himself a pie connoisseur and I consider myself a bit of a coffee connoissuer. We have to say this place does the best of both. We did find it more difficult in the South Island than the North Island of NZ to find good coffee. They have hot cooked meals and convenience sandwiches, cakes, pies etc. There is also a Souvenir shop next door, toilets and both indoor and outdoor seating. Great place for a stop between Wanaka and Haast.
Quirky and a good feed! ★★★★★
Part of Grand Pacific Coach Tour One of our lunch stops Food was fast, fresh and yummy Lots to look at inside… number plates and flags from all over the world! Also a small gift shop inside
Worth stopping for! ★★★★★
We needed a food stop before heading further north so chose the Makarora Country Cafe as the most convenient. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food/beverages and the service.
New staff were being inducted while we were there but that appeared to make no difference to the friendly and helpful service. The food was good!
