CAFÉ & BAR

Located on a prime freehold land title of approximately 338m² and situated on the main street in Port Chalmers, The Galley offers patrons a venue that is charming and cosy and can cater for approximately 68 patrons across the entire venue. The main indoor café and bar area is approximately 200m² on the ground floor level. This leads out onto a sun-drenched courtyard area, which is approximately 64m², and provides flexible indoor/outdoor dining spaces, along with a stunning open fireplace. There is also a separate bar, or function room, adjoining the main courtyard for overflow, which is approximately 48m².

Offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the café offers regular Pizza and Tapas on Friday and Saturday nights, as well as live music on Friday nights.

Current operating hours:

  • Friday 8:30am – 3:pm & 5:pm – late
  • Saturday 9:am – 3:pm & 5:pm – late
  • Sunday 9:am – 3:pm

Potentially the hours could be extended by a new owner, to make the most of the 1am licensing, as well as utilizing the venue to feature more live music on other nights of the week.

The Earthquake Report was completed in 2014, the building was classed as medium-risk 36%, so no requirement for any further earthquake proofing, unless you make structural changes to the building.

If desired, the super staff are available and keen to stay on and there is a great supporting website, as well as a well-established Facebook page, with potential for a new owner to grow the online presence further.

APARTMENT | ‘Home & Business’ opportunity or additional income stream?

The 1st Floor two-bedroom apartment is situated above the premises and is currently rented out on AirBnB. It is approximately 200m².  It could potentially be utilised by the new owner(s) as their own residential accommodation, or as onsite manager accommodation, or you could continue with it on AirBnb and keep the additional revenue stream in place.

This is a fantastic freehold going concern hospitality opportunity, that offers excellent cash flow with plenty of room for you to grow the business, in an area well-known for supporting its local venue. Perfect for a couple, extended family, or group to own and operate as it is currently run, or develop it further. About Dunedin

Tucked into a sheltered harbour on the east coast of New Zealand’s South Island, Ōtepoti Dunedin is a city rich in heritage, renowned for its wildlife and distinctly quirky character. Discover an intriguing mix of vibrant urban culture, wildly beautiful places and exceptional local cuisine. Known as the ‘Edinburgh of South’, Dunedin wears its Scottish heritage with pride. Surrounded by dramatic hills and at the foot of a long, picturesque harbour, Dunedin is one of the best-preserved Victorian and Edwardian cities in the Southern Hemisphere. It’s known for its Scottish and Maori heritage, Victorian and Edwardian architecture, and large student population. Hiking and cycling trails criss-cross the dramatic landscape of the adjoining Otago Peninsula, which is home to colonies of albatross, sea lions and rare yellow-eyed penguins.

About Port Chalmers

Suburb spotlight: Why you should visit Port Chalmers, Dunedin | Stuff.co.nz

Port Chalmers is a town serving as the main port of the city of Dunedin, New Zealand. It has a population of roughly 3,000. Port Chalmers lies ten kilometres inside Otago Harbour, some 15 kilometres northeast of Dunedin’s city centre. A short drive from Dunedin, historic Port Chalmers offers an interesting mix of heritage attractions, cafés and galleries. Known as an artists’ colony today, the township is a popular weekend excursion for Dunedin locals. The harbourside setting, intriguing galleries and relaxing eateries are all within easy walking distance of each other.

Pre-Covid, for six months of the year, from October to mid-April, Port Chalmers was a busy cruise port, with cruise ships arriving early in the morning and departing early evening, and this activity is expected to return once cruise ship restrictions are lifted in the future.

The Port Chalmers’ Regional Maritime Museum is housed in the original 1877 stone post office building. It has a maritime collection and a settlers’ collection, telling the stories of early pioneers and many port characters who have lived here over the years.

Port to Port Ferry & the Cycle Trails: Cycle the loop!

blank

The cycle trail extends up the west harbour past Port Chalmers township and main container shipping port and towards Aramoana sandspit. The winding road along both sides is bordered by a safe specially designed cycle trail of 54 kilometres in total length. It allows cyclists to enjoy some of the best views in Dunedin. From inner city Dunedin, towards the Harbour entrance, cyclists can choose from a flat cycle route to more breathtaking views, for those that choose to venture uphill. Although 54 kilometres in total length, the route can be shortened to suit everyone. The Loop can be completed by catching the Port To Port cycle ferry between Back Beach, Port Chalmers and Portobello. By cycling to one of these departure points and ferrying across the harbour, the distance for cycling is approximately 31 kilometres. This route is flat and very scenic. If you don’t ride often or haven’t ridden a bike for years this is perfect way to experience the thrill of riding a bike again. Totally safe and flat ride from Dunedin city. Also suitable for families with young children. The Otago Harbour cycleway is a fully seperated cycleway running from city along the harbour side of the Otago Peninsula to Portobello. As an optional add-on you can cross the Harbour at Portobello by Ferry to Port Chalmers. From Port Chalmers ride back to Dunedin on the West Harbour cycleway.

Best Chilli Salt and Pepper Squid ever! ★★★★

Went there for lunch with my two Uni student children just for a trip out. My son had the Chilli Salt and Pepper Squid and fries which I tried. The squid was so fresh and well cooked that it was nearly melt in your mouth. I haven’t had squid that good for a long time and it is something I order often. Hats off to the chef. The creamy mushrooms on ciabatta was great as well and the potato and leek soup was good.

Regular who has found the food awesome, and the staff even better! ★★★★

Have been going regularly to this Cafe since 2020. Food is exceptional (I’m very picky) and choices are impressive! Particular fond of the fruit shortcake and cream! Great atmosphere for my partner and I to chat in. Service is excellent! The waitresses go out of their way to make you feel welcome, and ordering is easy. The Wahine is particularly charming and always knows her regulars. Prices are really good, and not too expensive. If your visiting Dunedin, or a local, make sure you go to Port Chalmers and The Galley to have memorably good times. Totally deserves 5 Stars!

Yum! ★★★★

Great food and drinks and cool cafe decor. The cafe itself is nice and warm. Staff are super helpful and friendly. Would recommend, definitely worth the drive out to port.

Beautiful autumn day lunch ★★★★

Coffee came first ! then a massive bowl of piping hot chowder with turmeric toast butter and lemon wedges.

Brown Family ★★★★

We enjoyed a lovely meal, with beautiful seafood chowder (the best ever) , great coffees, and took home lovely cheese scones. Great service. We will be back!

Delish pizzas, friendly staff! ★★★★

Loved this place, veggie pizza and wine. Delicious Vegetarian pizza, nice wine to go with it. Staff were welcoming and chatty. Loved the place, the out door area, inside loved the whole place. Intending on going back, relaxing lunch, enjoyable.

Great place to stop for lunch ★★★★

This was the only place open for kai in Port following an adventure at Aramoana. The staff were adhering to Covid level 2 requirements but they made you feel very welcome and were really attentive. We had the mushrooms on sour dough and it was outstanding. Would recommend this cafe as a great place to warm up on a cold day and treat yourself to an affordable and tasty lunch
