Port Chalmers is a town serving as the main port of the city of Dunedin, New Zealand. It has a population of roughly 3,000. Port Chalmers lies ten kilometres inside Otago Harbour, some 15 kilometres northeast of Dunedin’s city centre. A short drive from Dunedin, historic Port Chalmers offers an interesting mix of heritage attractions, cafés and galleries. Port to Port Ferry & the Cycle Trails: Cycle the loop!


The cycle trail extends up the west harbour past Port Chalmers township and main container shipping port and towards Aramoana sandspit. The winding road along both sides is bordered by a safe specially designed cycle trail of 54 kilometres in total length. It allows cyclists to enjoy some of the best views in Dunedin. From inner city Dunedin, towards the Harbour entrance, cyclists can choose from a flat cycle route to more breathtaking views, for those that choose to venture uphill. Although 54 kilometres in total length, the route can be shortened to suit everyone. The Loop can be completed by catching the Port To Port cycle ferry between Back Beach, Port Chalmers and Portobello. By cycling to one of these departure points and ferrying across the harbour, the distance for cycling is approximately 31 kilometres. This route is flat and very scenic. If you don’t ride often or haven’t ridden a bike for years this is perfect way to experience the thrill of riding a bike again. Totally safe and flat ride from Dunedin city. Also suitable for families with young children. The Otago Harbour cycleway is a fully seperated cycleway running from city along the harbour side of the Otago Peninsula to Portobello. As an optional add-on you can cross the Harbour at Portobello by Ferry to Port Chalmers. From Port Chalmers ride back to Dunedin on the West Harbour cycleway.

Best Chilli Salt and Pepper Squid ever! ★★★★

Went there for lunch with my two Uni student children just for a trip out. My son had the Chilli Salt and Pepper Squid and fries which I tried. The squid was so fresh and well cooked that it was nearly melt in your mouth. I haven’t had squid that good for a long time and it is something I order often. Hats off to the chef. The creamy mushrooms on ciabatta was great as well and the potato and leek soup was good.

Have been going regularly to this Cafe since 2020. Food is exceptional (I’m very picky) and choices are impressive! Particular fond of the fruit shortcake and cream! Great atmosphere for my partner and I to chat in. Service is excellent! The waitresses go out of their way to make you feel welcome, and ordering is easy. The Wahine is particularly charming and always knows her regulars. Prices are really good, and not too expensive. If your visiting Dunedin, or a local, make sure you go to Port Chalmers and The Galley to have memorably good times. Totally deserves 5 Stars!
