RESTAURANT

Church Hill Restaurant offers a boutique dining experience for visitors wanting to sample the cuisine of Stewart Island. The main restaurant features a character 244m² (approx.) converted home, into a fabulous restaurant featuring an authentic log fire and includes a private dining room (also used as the breakfast room for the 3 suites currently operating on the property), a large main restaurant, sunroom dining area, and both an undercover and external dining deck and courtyard. The total Resource consent is for 48 dining guests, so the business is ideally set up for weddings, functions and conferences. The restaurant features a modern commercial kitchen and generous back of house storage.

BOUTIQUE LODGE

Church Hill is a short 5 minute walk from the Oban township, ferry terminal and flight centre. Offering personalised service, and three five-star 35m²stand alone suites, Church Hill aims to provide a quality experience for guests. All rooms have views of the bay and were built to face the sunrise for exquisite skies. Surrounded by native bush, the birds are only an arms length away. All rooms feature King-size beds, Sky TV, DVD, Wi-fi, tea and coffee making facilities, non-alcoholic refreshments, home baking, and in room lounging and dining facilities. A guest laundry is provided for the accommodation guests

  1. Foveaux Suite, named for it’s view into Foveaux Strait, with a private outdoor area, with a wood fired hot tub
  2. Kamahi Suite, so called as it has Kamahi trees directly in front, and the business is on Kamahi road
  3. Tokoeka Suite, the Maori name for the Rakiura kiwi, this suite is themed to represent the fauna of Stewart Island

The property enjoys a large car park for guests to park on site, however many guests are picked up and dropped off by the lodge and restaurant, at the ferry or air terminal.

POTENTIAL

There is additional space (subject to Council approval) to build a 4th suite alongside the existing 3 suites. There are currently several fantastic vegetable gardens and hot houses, which provide much of the organic vegetables and fruits for the restaurant, and there is room (subject to Council approval) to build a small owners cottage, plus there is an option to also purchase a section nearby (about 10 minutes’ walk) if the purchaser requires another property nearby.

HISTORY

Church Hill had been the Squires family holiday home dating back to the early 1900’s. They had called it “Tenola at Church Hill”. (Tenola is an anagram randomly drawn from a hat from the letters of lean-to). It was located on the hill where the church stands, hence the name: Church Hill.
