ABOUT HYDE

Hyde is the perfect place to rest and refuel the body while you’re on NZ’s famous Central Otago Rail Trail! The history of Hyde village reads much the same as many others along the Trail. Early gold miners (2000 of them), then pioneer sheep farmers, then the coming of the Railway, with construction workers – and now Rail Trailers. But Hyde had some other minerals to put it on the map – scheelite, pure white silica sand for glass making, schist rock used by builders, and “white ball” clay, still used for fine pottery. Although Hyde is a rural town, its Main Street runs along State Highway 87. This makes it a perfect place to rest and refuel the body as the nearest towns offering food and refreshments are Waipiata 29km’s away to the north and Middlemarch 27km’s to the south. There are also two gorgeous churches located on the main street. The old Hyde Railway station, 2km south of the village, once in private ownership, has been purchased by the Otago Central Rail Trail Trust and given a much needed facelift.  The building is now open to the public and offers a glimpse into the past.

THINGS TO DO IN HYDE

Hyde Diversion Tunnel: Early European miners peppered the Taieri river with gold and then on sold the mining rights to some Chinese gold miners who were led to believe it was a substantial claim. The Chinese gold miners built a tunnel to divert the river and make it easier to mine the gold. Whilst the diversion tunnel was laboriously and successfully constructed to the Chinese miners dismay the effort was in vain when the “planted” gold ran out shortly afterwards.

Hyde Station Site: At the Hyde Station Site take time to admire the old station building, which has recently been purchased by the Otago Central Rail Trail Trust and is open to the public. Although this was the main station for Hyde, there was a passenger halt at the township where the line crossed the main road. This halt was closed in 1978.

Fishing at Hyde: You can get to a good location from the Macraes road bridge. The Taieri river has brown trout in plentiful supply.

Awesome Hyde School ★★★★

Couldn’t fault the stay, arrived ~3pm and were welcomed by Tania. Relaxing afternoon followed by a beautiful dinner, with a wide variety of home grown vegetables. More than we could eat in a week, and washed down with a local G&T! Dessert was the icing on the cake. Great to chat with Ross and Tania and will definitely stay here again or recommend to others! Tania and Ross are the consummate hosts. They are genuinely welcoming and very interesting to talk with. Food and wine was the best by far on our 4 day rail trail adventure. This place is a must to stay.

Stayed here for one night while doing the Otago Rail Trail. Ross and Tania were lovely hosts. Room is spacious and with an ensuite but the memory I’ll take away was the great meal prepared for dinner (and what a spread it was, complete with dessert) over conversations with fellow travellers. Highly recommended if you plan to stay in Hyde.

This was our last night of a five day rail trail ride and we arrived early afternoon. Perfect place to sit back and relax with a glass or two of wine in the old school. The dinner that night was just out of this world. Beautiful slow cooked lamb. All cooked by the owner and our group of seven were just blown away by it. Can’t recommend it highly enough. The accommodation was a little more basic but clean and comfortable. We also had a great breakfast in the morning to send us on our way.

The most memorable dinner I had in NZ ★★★★

Dinner was superb, all food was all local and fresh. Everyone sits together at a long table sharing a beautiful meal and their experiences at the Central Otago Rail Trail.
It’s the perfect place to recharge after a long day of cycling. It’s cozy and welcoming. Ross and Tania made me feel like I was visiting dear old family friends. The price was above my regular budget but it was the only option since I booked it last minute. However, it was totally worth it. If you can, give yourself a treat and spend a night there!

Had a fantastic night here on our recent holiday cycling the Central Otago Rail Trail. The accommodation was awesome, our room was lovely, furnished with everything we needed for a very comfortable stay. The hosts Ross and Tania are wonderful hosts. Our dinner was simply divine Tania! We enjoyed our stay so much, thank you, and we have some funny memories to cherish as well. Hope to see you again one day.

What a wonderful stay! The gracious hospitality and kindness shared by Tania and Ross was exceptional and the memories of our time at the Hyde School will long linger and satisfy. Hyde School is right off the Otago Central Rail Trail and the rooms were lovely with plenty of space, comfy beds, and a small kitchenette. However, with the amazing meals that Tania provides, you’ll be smart to make your way down to the dining room to enjoy the heart, love, and soul that she pours into each of the many dishes offered at dinner. Wine and spirits are available, too, and it’s a fabulous combination. Two thumbs way, way up for Tania and Ross and the amazing Hyde School Accommodation and Eatery!
