Stopped for lunch – beautiful setting ★★★★★
Stopped for lunch here as part of our fantastic Backroads hiking tour. I would use the word beautiful repeatedly – for the views of the Tazman sea, for the gardens on the property, and the setting for our lunch. The food was delicious – lots of great vegetarian items – loved the beet salads best. The owners/staff were very warm and welcoming, I had a peak at a room – immaculate and nicely decorated
Great Stay ★★★★★
We spent two nights at Kapitea Lodge in December 2019. The Inn is a really lovely place. We really enjoyed the view of the ocean and the garden. Our room was very cozy and also had a great view. Doreen and Geoff we were great hosts. They gave us really good advice on restaurants and places to visit in the area. We really enjoyed our time there and will definitely come back.
We stopped for lunch- we stayed for 2 days. ★★★★★
We had stopped here for lunch which was excellent on our planned route to Franz Joseph. However a cyclone changed our plans as later in the day the bridge we would have to cross to the glacier was washed out. Fortunately our tour guides knew of Kapitea Lodge from previous travels and how lucky we were that they were able to accommodate us with 4 rooms. We had no where to go due to the weather and road conditions- we felt like we had been taken in. The rooms were clean, neat, well kept and quite comfortable as storms raged throughout the night. In the early evening, they served us an amazing appetizer spread. Morning breakfast consisted of coffee, juices, cereals and choice of eggs. There is in room coffee and tea. The grounds and garden areas are lovely. It is a lovely place to catch your breath and be cared for by gracious hosts. We can’t thank you enough for your help and hospitality.
Upon our arrival we were greeted by our hosts Doreen and Geoff, then given a tour of their establishment and shown to our room. Our room had a fantastic view of the gardens and ocean and all the amenities you would ever need. Our room was scrupulously clean and pre warmed prior to our arrival, a nice touch on a cool day in mid winter. The bed would be one of the best I have ever slept in. This accommodation is inclusive of breakfast and what a breakfast it was. Substantial portions of fresh fruit, including what I would have considered as ‘out of season’ fruit, yoghurt, selections of breads for toast, jams and spreads. The presentation was exquisite, as was everything about the lodge. This truely reflects our hosts as we were made to feel most welcome and given lots of suggestions as to what to do and see of the surrounding area during our short stay. My suggestion would be to stay at least 2 nights in order to do justice to Hokitika and the West Coast.
This place is superb! ★★★★★
We booked in to kapitea lodge after previous accomodation fell through and were very glad we did! The hosts could not have done more for us. I’ve travelled a bit but these two were the friendliest hosts I’ve ever met (without being over the top). The room was super clean and bathroom delightful with a large bath. The grounds were lovely and view spectacular. Continental breakfast was included and we got to meet some other folk to share a laugh with. If you want a lovely place to stay with some great west coast hospitality, go stay here. 10/10
Brilliant base for exploring the west coast 10/10
Doreen and Geoff were excellent hosts. We stayed here 3 nights and had many pleasant conversations. The whole atmosphere was very relaxing with the oceans views and gardens. I slept very well here. The outdoor patio area is very nice to enjoy a glass of wine. The property is close to Hokitika and Greymouth. (We had a nice dinner at “The Kitchen” in Hokitika and Greymouth has two good breweries available.) There’s also a glow worm glen just a few miles down the road at the edge of Hokitika. Great B&B! Great part of the country to visit!
Great hosts and property. Geoff and Doreen were excellent host, nothing was too much trouble. The room was splendid, the view from our balcony an added bonus, the garden a delight. Glad we chose to spend 3 nights here.
– lovely hosts, very accomodating and attentive
– breathtaking location (views from balcony, garden etc)
– beautiful ambiente (garden is AAA class)
– comfy and spacious rooms (bathroom ensuite with window, balcony with ocean views)
– very quiet and peaceful location
Quality plus! 10/10
Location and view was spectacular. Doreen and Geoff couldn’t be more friendly and helpful. We would thoroughly recommend this as a place to stay. All details were of the finest quality.
The most beautiful view of gardens and the Pacific Ocean. Birdsongs galore!!!!
The enchanting garden is like in Alice in Wonderland! The sea view 🙂 The owners 🙂
5/5| If you live in a big city with dense population and want to experience calm quiet living you will enjoy this stay. And it’s a great getaway spot. This property has great gardens for nature lovers to enjoy and looks down over the Tasman Sea.
5/5 | Fantastic hosts, very nice rooms and a beautiful location… everything was lovingly cared and we felt very thankful to have stayed in this place.
5/5 | Amazing place to stay with ocean view.
5/5 | A real west coast treasure! Highly recommended. It felt like staying in a better homes and gardens magazine only better. Exquisite continental breakfast. Gorgeous Tasman Sea views from almost every window. Quaint gardens are well maintained. Exceptionally clean and comfortable. Our hosts Doreen and Geoff were very welcoming and down to earth. They have a wealth of local knowledge of the region and it’s history. Just a few minutes drive from town, it is a peaceful and relaxing location away from the tourist crowd. Do yourself a favour and stay two nights to explore what Hokitika and its surrounds have to offer, you will not regret it.
5/5 | This lodge is the best on the west coast. Everything a person needs is provided along with spectacular views, great rooms and outstanding dinners provided by the hosts. Highly recommended!!
