About the West Coast, or ‘the Coast’ as locals call it, is a wild place of rivers and rainforests, glaciers and geological treasures. Never more than 50 kilometres wide, the whole stretch down the West Coast of the South Island – of which Greymouth is the largest town – is home to only 31,000 people.

It’s good if you’ve got your own transport because this is a long region and there’s a lot to see. In fact, the Great Coast Road stretching from Westport to Greymouth was recently voted one of the top 10 coastal drives in the world by Lonely Planet.

Visit the Franz Josef and Fox glaciers. These giant rivers of ice have squeezed down the valleys to just 250 metres above sea level.

The pancake rocks and blowholes at Punakaiki are among the West Coast’s most famous sights and a definite ‘must-see’ in this region. Only 45 minutes’ drive from Punakaiki is the Denniston Experience, where you’ll journey by train deep into a historic coal mine for a fascinating insight into West Coast mining history.

Take in the views from the new Westcoast Treetop Walk among ancient rimu, marvel at the limestone cliffs of Paparoa National Park and the vivid turquoise water in the Hokitika Gorge.

The West Coast is New Zealand’s only source of greenstone (pounamu) with the boulders found in the West Coast rivers. In Hokitika and Greymouth you can take a tour and watch the greenstone carvers at work.

Meet the ‘coasters’ as the locals are known and you’ll find a bunch of independent, self-reliant but hugely friendly and hospitable people. Sit down and have a beer with them and they’ll regale you with west coast stories.

Kapitea - QV report

Superb Upon our arrival we were greeted by our hosts Doreen and Geoff, then given a tour of their establishment and shown to our room. Our room had a fantastic view of the gardens and ocean and all the amenities you would ever need. Our room was scrupulously clean and pre warmed prior to our arrival, a nice touch on a cool day in mid winter. The bed would be one of the best I have ever slept in.

This accommodation is inclusive of breakfast and what a breakfast it was. Substantial portions of fresh fruit, including what I would have considered as ‘out of season’ fruit, yoghurt, selections of breads for toast, jams and spreads. The presentation was exquisite, as was everything about the lodge. This truely reflects our hosts as we were made to feel most welcome and given lots of suggestions as to what to do and see of the surrounding area during our short stay.
My suggestion would be to stay at least 2 nights in order to do justice to Hokitika and the West Coast.

Fantastic place for lunch and a tour of the fabulous gardens ! This place is a hidden gem. We stopped for lunch at Kapitea Lodge on our way down the west coast of the South Island of New Zealand. The food was spectacular and the views from the outdoor patio were gorgeous. Plus the team at the lodge was very welcoming…and the home baked breads were fresh from the oven and dreamy! Be sure to spend a few minutes exploring the gorgeous gardens. The lodge does accommodate overnight guests and seems like a perfect place to enjoy some time on the journey up or down the Island.

Lovely lodge, hosted by gracious people Kapitea Lodge is a lovely place to stay in the Hokitika area. The lodge has a beautiful garden and an outdoor fireplace. The rooms have good views of the ocean and trees. Geoff and Doreen are very gracious hosts, which gave our stay a personal touch. The complimentary continental breakfast is convenient and we enjoyed talking to the other guests at the lodge at the large dining table (you can have breakfast at a different time or different table if you don’t want to socialize). They had good recommendations for dining. We drove from the Windwhistle/Mt Hutt area that day, and it was the perfect place to break our journey before driving on to Franz Josef the next day.
