ADDITIONAL INFROMATION | HISTORIC PIPERS LODGE
Paul Piper started Pipers Lodge back In 1966 as a Ski Lodge. Since then the lodge has evolved into an all year round business accommodating not just skiers but anyone wanting to stay in this adventure area. The lodge has always been family-owned and operated with Bruce and Dianne hosting the lodge for the past 26 years. They genuinely enjoy what they do, which is giving you a warm, friendly, relaxed stay while you are with them.
Pipers Lodge boasts a relaxing hot tub and an onsite bar and restaurant. Guests can socialize in the shared lounge and warm up by the fireplace.
There is an onsite games room offering table tennis, billiards, and arcade games.
Nearby activities include skiing, hiking, and cycling – Transport to Tongariro Alpine Crossing is available daily.
Sky Waka Gondola – New Zealand’s largest and most technically advanced gondola.
Situated within the dual world heritage Tongariro National Park, Sky Waka travels 1.8kms through one of the North Island’s most rugged and spectacular landscapes on Whakapapa, Mt Ruapehu.
You can also ski or snowboard at the popular Whakapapa Ski Field, Mt Ruapehu.
The Tongariro National Park which is centered upon three volcanoes (Tongariro, Ngauruhoe, and Ruapehu), is home to some of New Zealand’s most dramatic landscapes and is just 7.5 minutes drive from the Pipers Lodge.
Tongariro became New Zealand’s first national park in 1887. Just over one hundred years later, the park was awarded dual UNESCO World Heritage status for both its cultural significance to the Māori people, as well as its outstanding natural features.
The 80,000 hectare park is a spectacular showcase of volcanic wonders including emerald lakes, old lava flows, steaming craters, colorful silica terraces, and peculiar alpine gardens. It is an environment of staggering beauty and diversity.
Whakapapa Ski Field and Tongariro National Park is in the top ten bucket list for many New Zealanders and International Tourists.

Perfect stay for tongariro crossing 10/10
Loved it, staff were super friendly. Rooms great value. Spa room a treat after the tongariro crossing. Open fire awesome with bar.
Superb service 5/5
The owner saved us when Tongariro Crossing Shuttles cancelled our transfer & did not tell us 🙁 The owner did not want us to miss the hike so she very kindly drove us out there & arranged a return transfer. Service way & beyond & will be forever grateful. The lodge is very quaint & the food good. Thank you Pipers!
Two nights with a Crossing in between 5/5
This is a very good place to stay if you plan to do the Tongariro Crossing.
Debbie had useful advice and lent me a beanie (bring your own, and gloves!) Her son, on his second day working there after graduating, was learning fast. Unexpected surprise – a big group of geography undergraduates who were on field trip. I liked my conversations with them in the hot tub room and sat in on their seminar in the lounge after supper – Bruce stood me a glass of wine to compensate for not having a quiet evening.
Useful facilities – the kitchen with a big fridge, the drying room and laundry room. Parking right next to your room was great, and it was good to be away from the busy through road with big trucks.
