Hawera in Southern Taranaki

With a population of 11,000, Hawera is the second-largest town in the Taranaki region of New Zealand’s North Island. It is near the coast of the South Taranaki Bight, 75 kilometres south of New Plymouth on State Highway 3 and 20 minutes’ drive from Mount Taranaki/Egmont.

It is also on State Highway 45, known as Surf Highway 45 for its numerous surf beaches. State Highway 45 passes through Manaia, Opunake and Oakura en route to New Plymouth. Kaponga is a 20-minute drive to the north-west. The Marton – New Plymouth Line railway passes through Hawera and has served the town since 1 August 1881, though it has been freight-only since the cancellation of the last railcar passenger service between Wellington and New Plymouth on 30 July 1977.

Hawera is Maori for burnt place, from fighting between two local sub-tribes, which culminated in the setting ablaze of the sleeping whare (house) of the tribe under attack.

The name became apt when the town suffered extensive blazes in 1884, 1888, and 1912. For this reason a large water tower was built in the centre of town to increase water pressure; and this became one of Taranaki’s best-known landmarks (appearing, for example, on the cover of the 1974 telephone directory). After falling into disrepair the tower was closed to the public in 2001, but after an extensive restoration program it opened again in 2004

Hawera is also home to the largest dairy factory complex in the Southern Hemisphere, “Whareroa”, which has its own gas-fired powerplant. The complex is owned by Fonterra, having been built by the former Kiwi Co-operative Dairies Limited (whose original plant opened on that site in 1975).

Hawera is also home to Tawhiti Museum, well-known for its hand-crafted life-sized wax sculptures depicting scenes of local heritage and history, and its scale models of local Maori pa.

Staying in Taranaki on a work trip ★★★★★

Rooms are really tidy, have everything and are reasonably priced. A short walk to town and with Pak n Save across the road. Facilities were above average and the hosts have gone out of their way to make the place clean and tidy but with a homely feel. I will be back.

Best Motel in Hawera ★★★★★

We stayed at the Central Motel for almost 2 weeks due to having an ill family member in Hawera. Morrie and Jenny are fabulous hosts and couldn’t do enough for us. We stayed in both the family room and the one bedroom units. Both were fabulous, so clean and comfortable. Everything you need is at hand. The beds are comfortable, showers are great and you have facilities to cook a meal in every room. The complimentary basket of goodies each day is a lovely touch and Jenny even provided us with some home cooked goodies on a few occasions, this was very nice of her. The Motel is in a great position there is a Supermarket just across the road and is walking distance to town. The Motel is very popular and was booked out every night we stayed. We highly recommend this Motel and it will be our base when we need to visit again. Thank you Morrie and Jenny

This Motel is a surprise! ★★★★★

Not too often do I get to give an absolutely thumps up yet the Hawera Central Motor Lodge certainly fits that group rather well. Not too often do I even stop in a small town, rather drive on by. Friendly Owner, well-kept property and can see there’s pride in what they do. Its a short stroll to town, cafes, bars and restaurants.
My room for 1 night was impressively large with a separate bedroom, 2 TV’s, comfy couch and plenty of kitchen stuff if you want to do your own thing. Nice gesture with snack bowl of goodies on the dining table. There is even a small torch in the draw in case of a black-out – first time I’ve seen that. The bathroom is very large and complete with a corner spa unit and looks brand new. Breakfast is on offer yet I chose to walk across the road to a local café for a change of scenery and the all-important flat white start to the day. This is an extremely clean and tidy motel where things look new but are just well kept. This will be my preferred stay when next in Hawera.

Our family stayed here last weekend. The owners were friendly and provided us with information on local amenities. Our units were very clean, nicely decorated and well equipped. The motel is well situated within walking distance to bars, cafes and supermarket.

This is a fabulous place to stay. Centrally located; walking distance to shops/cafes. Rooms are spotless and well maintained. Bathroom amenities and kitchen amenities are top of the range. There was a complimentary gift basket with cheese, chocolates, apples – a nice touch. Rooms are spacious and light. Bed and pillows extremely comfortable. The owners are lovely – very friendly and helpful. Nothing is too much trouble. Would certainly recommend.

The Motor lodge is centrally located, everything is clean , well maintained. What makes it stand out is the little things, we arrived late- the heaters were on so the rooms were warm. Small bowl of complimentary goodies, an apple , a kiwi fruit as well as the usual biscuit and a couple of small bars of chocolate.
