Roxburgh, Lake Roxburgh, Hiking & Cycling Trails & Gold-mining History.
Fish for trout, kayak a 30 kilometre lake or hike historic trails through the surrounding hills and mountains.
Roxburgh is located halfway between Dunedin and Queenstown on the banks of the Clutha River. An important centre during the Central Otago goldrush of the 1860s, in more recent times Roxburgh has relied on a mixture of livestock and stone fruit production for its economic survival.
The region’s hot summers and cold winters are ideal for growing summer fruits. Stone fruits, strawberries, apples, raspberries and pears are all grown here. The nationally famous Roxburgh Red apricot was first planted in 1866 by Joseph Tamblyn, who bought a few fruit trees from a passing swagman.
A few kilometres upstream from the town, behind the huge Roxburgh hydro dam, lies Lake Roxburgh. This scenic lake extends almost 30 kilometres towards Alexandra. It offers extensive kayak touring and is well stocked with brown and rainbow trout.
There are numerous trails for hiking and mountain biking around the town and in the surrounding craggy mountain ranges. The Lake Roxburgh Walk takes around eight hours return and is entirely within the Roxburgh Gorge. The area contains a fascinating landscape of relics from the gold mining days, including shelters, huts, water-races and various workings. The gorge displays some of the best-preserved examples of Chinese miners’ rock shelters in Otago.

Excellent accommodation on our bike trip! ★★★★★
We stayed at Clutha Gold Cottages between the Roxburgh Gorge and Clutha Gold bike trails. Our cottage was very spacious, totally clean, had breakfast things for us and the proprietor took us into town to get something for dinner. Very friendly and helpful. We were very happy with our stay and very much recommend it.
Great overnight stay ★★★★★
We stayed for 1 night in our Clutha gold bike ride and wished we had booked for more nights. The cottage was incredibly comfortable. Older in style but redecorated, clean and contained all that was needed. The setting is just delightful with attractive gardens. Someone clearly has a passion for aesthetics. The kids loved the games room and playground, even after a long ride. Staff were friendly and accommodating as we car shuttled both days
A favourite camping ground ★★★★★
I am a regular at this lovely camp ground, I am usually on a powered site. This time I decided to stay a night in one of the cottages. The cottage is lovely with lots of attention to detail. It is wonderfully clean and tidy with modern touches. The bed is so comfy, heaven and bliss all at once! There is plenty of HOT water and good pressure in the shower. The camp ground is immaculate, clean with modern facilities. It is a small, relaxed and friendly camp ground. I really like how they have incorporated some of the original pipes and sleepers around the camp site. Christine (the owner) and her small team take pride in their work and are wonderful host.
Clutha’s best kept secret ★★★★★
If they awarded Michelin stars for camping grounds, this one would have three. Small but spacious, it is groomed to perfection. Christine, your host, is welcoming, friendly and energetic. It’s cleaner than clean; cotton hand towels and shower mats, quirky kitchen and beautifully appointed cabins. Powered gravel caravan/motorhome sites, beautiful spacious lawns for tents or for children to play. Activities for children and direct access fo Clutha Gold Trail. Can’t praise it enough.
Beauty surrounds ★★★★★
Awesome setting, lovely cottages all done up. Friendly and welcoming host. Communal room, bikes to ride, all round beautiful place to enjoy quiet time or use as a base to explore the area. Wake up to the birds singing.
Great spot ★★★★
Stopped off for the night here. Christine runs this complex so well ! Perfect for a young family as there’s lots to keep them entertained. Cleanliness is 10/10. A 5 min drive from town but definitely worth driving off the main road for.

The grounds were very well kept; nice lawns, lovely gardens complete with rustic fences
There were plenty of activities to keep children amused
Exceptional 10/10

Exceptional 10/10
Our quaint little cabin had everything we needed – and the bed was very comfortable! The location was superb, and there is some great climbing apparatus for young children. Christine was very helpful, and we really enjoyed our conversation.
